What you get back from an oven clean

An oven that looks like new. Clear door glass, clean racks and trays, and the burnt-on carbon that smokes and smells is gone.

To do that, these come off or come apart:

  • The door, off at the hinges
  • The inner glass panes, where the door splits
  • The racks, the runners and the trays
  • The fan cover, and the housing behind it
  • The seal channel round the cavity

We work top to bottom, so nothing drips onto a part we have already cleaned. Racks and trays come out first. Where the door splits, the inner panes come out and both sides are cleaned. The fan cover comes off too, which is the answer to why an oven smells.

What doing it yourself cannot reach

  • The inside faces of the door glass, because the door has to come apart first
  • The fan housing behind the cover, which is where the smell and the smoke come from
  • The seal channel round the cavity, where the run off collects and sets
  • The undersides of the racks and the runners they sit on

What kind of oven or cooker have you got?

All on the same price list.

Single, up to 60cm
£75. One oven, one door. How long an oven clean takes
Double, or a separate grill
£90. Two ovens, two doors and two sets of glass.
Gas cooker or electric cooker
Both, on the same price list. The oven is priced by its size, and the hob on top is added: £20 for a gas hob, £15 for ceramic or induction.
Built in or built under
Cleaned where it sits. Same price.
Slide and hide
The door slides into the cabinet, so the runners collect grease. They come out and get cleaned.
Pyrolytic
The self clean cycle leaves the glass, the racks and the fan cover to be done by hand. We do them. Are pyrolytic and catalytic ovens safe?
Catalytic lined
Rough matte panels on the sides and back. Nothing caustic goes near them. We clean them by hand. Catalytic liners, and how to tell if you have them

Questions people ask about oven cleaning

Why does the smell come back when I clean it myself?

Because the part that smells is not the part you can reach. Supermarket cleaner softens the grease on the surfaces in front of you, but the carbon baked onto the element, the roof and the fan housing stays where it is, and that is what smokes when the oven gets hot. Taking the fan cover off is why a professional clean lasts so much longer.

How do I know if my oven has catalytic liners?

They are the rough, matte panels on the sides and back, and they feel like fine sandpaper, not smooth like enamel. Caustic cleaner destroys them permanently and the only fix is a new set, so we check before anything goes near the oven and clean them by hand instead.

Am I committing to anything by asking for a price?

No. Asking is not booking, we quote without visiting, and the number you get back is fixed in writing and does not change on the day. If something genuinely will not come back, a pitted base or crazed glass, we tell you before we start.

Do I need to be in the house while you work?

Someone needs to let us in, and after that you can get on with your day. We need power and water and somewhere to put the door down, and we work around whoever is in. Most people put the kettle on and then forget we are there.

Does a pyrolytic self cleaning oven still need doing?

Usually yes. The pyrolytic cycle burns the cavity out at around 500 degrees, but the door glass, the seal channel, the racks and the fan cover are still done by hand, and it leaves ash behind. What it does well it does very well, and the rest is still a hand job.

What if the oven is built into a tall housing?

That is normal and it is not a problem. The door still comes off in place, and the racks and trays come out to be cleaned. We only need enough room in front of it to work and somewhere clear to lay the door.

Can you get an oven back that has not been cleaned in years?

Nearly always. Carbon that has been baked on for a decade takes longer, not different chemicals, and the price does not change because of it. Where something is genuinely past saving, a pitted base or crazed glass, we will tell you before we start.
