Why does my oven smell?

East Cambs Oven Cleaning, Burwell, Cambridgeshire. Published 10 October 2026.

The short answer

Why does my oven smell? Most often it is old grease and food burning off as the oven heats, and it stops when the oven is cleaned. A new oven smells for its first half hour, and oven cleaner left behind smells too. If it smells of gas, leave it off and ring 0800 111 999.

What does the smell tell you?

Which smell it is tells you what to do. One of the four is ours to put right, and what that costs is on the price list.

  • Burning, or smoke

Old grease and food burning off as the oven heats.

When: As it warms up, with the grill on, or with nothing in it.

What to do: It wants cleaning where the smell sits, which is not the shelves.

  • Plastic

On a new oven, coatings from the factory burning off.

When: The first time it is used.

What to do: Windows open and follow the first use page of the manual. On an oven that is not new, switch it off.

  • Chemical, after cleaning

Oven cleaner that was not rinsed out.

When: The first time it gets hot after a clean.

What to do: Rinse it again and air the room.

  • Gas

Treat it as a gas leak.

    When: Any time.

What to do: Ring 0800 111 999 and leave the oven off.

Why does my oven smell of burning?

Because old grease and food inside the oven are burning as it heats. Beko: “The dirty oven can produce smoke and other unpleasant smells whilst the appliance is in use.” Fat spits onto the roof, the element and the fan housing every time you roast, and it bakes harder each time the oven is used.

That is why it smells before any food goes in, and why wiping the base does not shift it. The parts that smell are behind something: the fan cover unscrews and the door comes apart. How to clean a really dirty oven is the order to do it in yourself, and where a home clean stops.

It is worth doing for more than the smell. Electrical Safety First, the UK safety charity: “Keep your oven and grill clean as built-up fat and grease is a major cause of fire.”

Why is my oven smoking?

Usually for the same reason, with more of it. Beko: “The most common cause of a smoking oven is a dirty oven. Excess food that is left in the oven after cooking will burn when the appliance is used over time.” Smoke with nothing in the oven, or the moment the grill goes on, is that.

One case is not a cleaning job. If a gas oven still makes soot and smoke once it is clean, Beko says “this could indicate the burner is not working correctly and should be checked by an authorised Beko engineer before being used again”.

We clean the parts that smell. A single oven is £75 and a double is £90, fixed before we arrive.

Why does my new oven smell of plastic?

It is the factory finish burning off, and it is normal. Beko: “All cooking appliances can give off a pungent smell and smoke when first used. This is caused by the removal of coatings applied during the production process and can last for up to half an hour.”

Hoover says the same and gives the method: “Open the windows of the room and switch the oven on to full heat and after 30 minutes the smell will disappear.” Your own manual has a first use page, and that is the one to follow.

An oven that is not new is different. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service lists it among the signs of an appliance overheating: “Be aware if there is a smell of hot plastic or burning near an appliance or socket.” Switch it off. That is one for the maker or an electrician, not for a clean.

Why does my oven smell after cleaning?

Usually because cleaner is still in it. Oven Pride’s own directions are to “remove residue with sponge and rinse with hot soapy water”, and to “Ventilate the room during and after use.” What stays in the corners and the seal channel gets hot the next time the oven does.

Rinse it again, more than seems necessary, and dry it. Do shop bought oven cleaners work? covers what those products reach and what their labels rule out. After one of our cleans the oven is back together, dry and usable the same evening.

What should I do if my oven smells of gas?

Stop, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It is free to call at any hour. That holds even if you only notice it as the oven lights: Bosch says of its own gas hobs that “all potential gas leaks should be investigated”. This is not a cleaning job. Cadent, a gas network, lists what to do first:

  • Do. “Open doors and windows to ventilate the property.” “Turn off the gas at the mains tap.”
  • Do not. “Turn any power or light switches on or off.” “Light any sort of flame within the property.” “Use any appliances that could cause a spark.”

Is it safe to use an oven that smells?

It depends which smell. A new oven’s smell is, in Beko’s words, “completely normal”. A smell of gas is never safe to cook through, and neither is a smell of hot plastic from an oven that is not new. A burning smell means there is old grease in the oven, and it will be there every time you cook until it is cleaned out.

So the burning smell is the one to act on, not to get used to. How often to clean your oven has the three signs that a cooker is due.

If it smells of burning, it wants cleaning. Tell us what is in the kitchen and you get the whole number back, fixed, before anybody turns up.

How do you get rid of an oven smell?

Take out what is burning. A bowl of lemon water sweetens the air for a day and leaves the cause where it was. The smell goes when the carbon does, and the carbon is on the parts that have to come off to be reached.

That is what an oven clean from us is: the door comes apart so the inside of the glass is done, the fan cover comes off, the shelves and the grill pan come out, and the seal channel is cleaned with them. A single oven is £75 and a double is £90, fixed before we arrive.

Questions about oven smells

Why does my oven smell when I preheat it?

Because what is baked onto the element, the roof and the fan housing gets hot before any food goes in. Nothing on the shelves causes it, which is why it smells with the oven empty. Beko calls a dirty oven the most common cause of a smoking oven.

How long does a new oven smell last?

Not long. Beko says the smell and smoke from a new cooker can last for up to half an hour, and Hoover says the smell will disappear after 30 minutes at full heat with the windows open. Follow the first use section of your own manual.

What does it cost to have a smelly oven cleaned?

The same as any other oven: £75 for a single and £90 for a double, fixed before we arrive. A smell does not add to the price, however long it has been there.
