Why the national guides quote less

A national cost guide averages the whole country, so it is not wrong, it is just not about here. It takes in every region, including the ones that run cheaper than the east, and the bottom of its own range rather than what the people near you actually charge.

The one national figure that is actually local, Checkatrade's Cambridgeshire guide, lands at £74 with a range of £58 to £93, which is almost exactly where the local price lists sit. Treat the UK wide averages as a floor rather than a quote.

What actually changes the price

The appliance, not the state of it. A single oven is a single oven whether it was done last spring or has never been touched.
What else goes in the same visit. A hob alongside an oven is £15, on its own it is £20 and it still has to clear the £65 minimum.
Travel. Ours is included inside the twelve mile ring and a flat £10 past it, said before you book rather than added after. Some operators add a fuel surcharge for outlying villages.
VAT. A business over the VAT threshold has to charge it, so 20% goes on top. We are not registered, so nothing is added.

Is it cheaper to clean it yourself?

Cheaper on the morning, dearer by the year. Here is what each one actually buys.

A tub and a morning

A few pounds of supermarket cleaner and most of a Saturday. It softens the grease you can see. The fan cover, the seal channel and the inside of the door glass are the parts it never reaches, because they come apart rather than wipe, and they are where the smoke and the smell come from. That is why the smell is back within a fortnight.

£70 and none of your day

The door comes apart so the inside of the glass is cleaned, the fan cover comes off, the racks and the grill pan are soaked rather than scrubbed, and the bulbs and the seal channel are included. One visit, the price fixed in writing before we set off, no VAT and no call out fee.

A morning with the right method will get you as far as anybody gets without taking the door apart. What it cannot do is reach the four places that decide whether an oven smokes: behind the fan cover, in the seal channel, between the panes of the door and under the base. Nor will it tell you whether your oven has catalytic liners before the caustic goes on and destroys them, which is a check we make before anything comes out of the van. That is the whole job, and it is £70.

If a quote is cheaper than everything around it, one of those five is usually missing. Ask which.

The prices people forget to ask about

End of tenancy is the common one. The landlord pack is £115 and covers the oven, the hob, the extractor and photographs for the file, which is what a letting agent wants to see.

A barbecue is £80 between May and August. A hob, extractor or microwave on its own is £20 to £40 depending on the size, with the £65 minimum applying to a visit without an oven in it. Commercial kitchens are priced per job.

So what should you pay?

For a single oven in East Cambridgeshire, anything from £60 to £80 is a normal price, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest quote for the same oven is most of thirty pounds. What fills that gap is not the cleaner, it is what comes apart: the door, the fan cover, the racks. Ours is £70 with all of it included, no VAT and nothing added afterwards, and you are told the whole number before anybody sets off.

Questions about what it costs

What does end of tenancy oven cleaning cost?

£115 for the three appliances and the dated photographs, against £70 for an oven on its own. It is priced for the handover, where the whole kitchen has to pass an inspection rather than just the oven, and the date on the photographs is what a letting agent is looking for.

Do oven cleaners charge VAT?

Some do. A business over the VAT threshold has to be registered, and then 20% goes on top, so a £75 clean is £90. We are not VAT registered, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay. It is worth asking before you book, because a quote with VAT to add and one without sound the same on the phone.

How much does it cost to clean an AGA in Cambridgeshire?

Published local prices run from £95 to £180 depending on the number of doors and who you ask. Ours is £140 for a two door AGA or Rayburn, and three and four door models are quoted from photographs, usually from £170. The spread is wide because a four door is most of a day's work and a two door is not.

What does it cost to have a barbecue cleaned?

Ours is £80 between May and August, and the one other published local price we found was £85. It is a seasonal job, so the good slots go early in the summer and again in September when people are putting them away.

Are there call out fees or extras on top?

Not with us. Travel is free within 12 miles of Burwell and a flat £10 beyond it, said before you book, and there is no call out fee and no VAT. Do read the terms wherever you book, because at least one operator round here charges £50 if they arrive and cannot get in.
