  • The grease trap and the inside of the canopy
  • The outside of the hood and the chimney section

What comes out of an extractor hood

  • The metal mesh filters, out and into a hot soak
  • The grease trap or drip channel behind them
  • The canopy, inside and out
  • The light covers, and the bulbs if they have gone

A filter is layers of mesh, and grease sets between the layers where a cloth never goes. Soaking is what shifts it. The canopy above the filters collects the rest, and on a recirculating hood there is a carbon filter behind all of it that absorbs smells and has to be replaced rather than cleaned.

What doing it yourself cannot reach

  • Between the layers of a mesh filter, which needs a soak rather than a wipe
  • The grease trap behind the filters, where it collects and sets hard
  • The inside of the canopy above the fan

What kind of hood have you got?

The width sets the price. What it does with the air decides whether a new filter is part of the answer.

Standard, under 90cm
£20 alongside an oven clean. Filters out, soaked and refitted, canopy and trap done by hand.
90cm or wider
£30 alongside an oven. More filters, more canopy, and usually a chimney section above it as well.
Ducted
Vents outside. The filters catch the grease and the duct stays comparatively clean, so cleaning the filters is most of the job.
Recirculating
Blows back into the room through a carbon filter. That filter absorbs smells, fills up, and gets replaced rather than cleaned, usually once or twice a year.

Where we come to

Extractors get forgotten for years in every one of these places, which is usually why a kitchen smells of last Sunday.

What people say about the extractors

  • Booked on the Tuesday, done on the Thursday. The door glass came up like new and the kitchen was tidier than when he arrived.

  • Quoted over the phone and that was the price. No fuss, no upselling, and the oven stopped smoking the first time we used it.

  • Took the door apart to do between the glass, which the last lot would not do. Worth it for that alone.

Questions people ask about extractor hoods

Is extractor fan cleaning the same thing as a hood clean?

Same appliance, different words. The hood is the canopy over the cooker, the fan is the motor inside it, and a clean here covers the canopy, the grease trap and the metal filters, which is where the grease and the smell actually sit. The fan housing is wiped where it can be reached without taking the motor out. £20 alongside an oven clean.

Do the filters come out, or do you wipe them in place?

They come out. A mesh filter holds grease all the way through it, and the only way to move that is to lift the filter out and soak it. Wiping one in place cleans the face and leaves the inside exactly as it was, which is where the smell sits.

How do I know if a filter is past saving?

Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see daylight through the mesh after it has been soaked, the grease has set inside the layers and a new one is the honest answer. We will tell you when that is the case rather than charge you for cleaning it anyway.

Do you clean carbon filters too?

No, and nobody can. The carbon filter in a recirculating hood absorbs smells rather than grease, and once it is full it has to be replaced rather than cleaned. How often depends on how much frying goes on, so the maker's guide is the one to go by. We will tell you which type yours has while we are in there.

Can you get to the ducting?

We clean the hood, the grease trap and the filters. Ductwork inside the wall or the ceiling is a different trade with different equipment, and for a domestic kitchen it is rarely the thing causing the problem.

Is a greasy extractor hood a fire risk?

Built up grease is flammable, so a hood that is never cleaned is carrying fuel directly above the hob. The filters and the grease trap are where it collects, and cleaning them out is how it goes. It is one of the few cleaning jobs in a kitchen that is about more than how it looks.

Do you clean hoods that are built into a cabinet?

Yes. Integrated and canopy hoods have metal filters that drop out the same way as a chimney hood, and the canopy is done by hand where it can be reached. The price is set by the width of the hood, not by how it is fitted.
